A big feature of grade 5’s technology use in 2014/15 will be an introduction to computer science. This has begun over the last few weeks with the use of the Hopscotch app for coding. After a period of free experimentation, students used code to programme their character to move on screen in various ways.
The Hopscotch app allows students to drag and drop blocks of code to create their own programmes, and provides them with an understanding of the basic principles of coding. We discussed the importance of the order of the blocks and used students as physical examples to demonstrate that we can programme computers to follow instructions they same way we do.
It was very exciting to see our students experience enjoyment from seeing their character follow their commands on screen.
Onwards and upwards for our mini Mark Zuckerberg’s!
